Some of the pieces of my final project that appealed to me, the great work that influenced me to complete the final piece!
1. RCA VC | Yunling Wu
Beyond Language takes an imaginative scientific perspective on the construction of a nascent language system that spans living and non-living entities.
Through the analysis of object tracking data, using algorithms as a tool for everything from observing birds in flight to plants dancing, from the interstellar to the microscopic, the project seeks to find instances of communication with unity in the coexistence of all things.
Thinking:
How can we approach a language that goes beyond human? The project offers its own definition. Language is closely linked to thinking, and it is beyond language that thinking beyond human beings can take place.
2. Time Thickness | Lifan Lai
Project background and research
Starting in 2020, I began to struggle with myself during my isolation. The internet became my window to the outside world, and the real window was a constant picture.
I read the news on my computer, compare city posts on social media, find out what people are doing and what's happening in the country of the week, and scroll through countless online images every day, like falling down a rabbit hole.
My thoughts:
Can one picture represent one thing?
Can a picture represent an event? Can an angle represent the truth?
Can one second of shuttering represent the development of an event?
I imagine that images have a temporal thickness, that many images constitute a given
length of time.
3. RCA Neobridging | Can Yang
Interview.
Much of Can's interest lies in understanding the oversaturation and contextualisation of images in our lives. She explains, for example, that digital images have become an obvious endpoint due to the accelerating development of 'immaterialism' within the creative field. This means that the materiality of digital media has been controversial and many conversations around art in the digital age seem to affirm this end point, particularly when reproduction or re-creation leads to the devaluation of the work or the 'diminishing of the aura', as Can describes it. Conversely, the works in Can's graduation exhibition exist not only in digital space, but also across media, 'from traditional painting and drawing, to reproducible etching and printing, indexed photography and film images, to digital manipulation.
